For the avoidance of doubt, your personal information will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, Legit.ng has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.

Lawful basis for processing your personal information

The legal basis on which Legit.ng processes your personal information is the performance of its public task. Legit.ng's role is to act in the public interest and to serve all audiences with content which informs, educates and entertains.

If you are unsuccessful, Legit.ng will delete your data on or by 31 December 2021.

CONTEST RULES (Competition Terms and Conditions)

These Contest Rules ("Rules") apply to contest that is conducted by Naij.com Media Limited ("Legit.ng"). By participating or attempting to participate in a Big Naija Independence: Prominent Students Contest ("Contest") governed by these Rules you will be deemed to have received, understood, and agreed to these Rules.

1. WHO MAY ENTER THE CONTEST?

1.1. The Contest is open only to residents of the Republic of Nigeria who have reached 18 years of age as of the date of entry.

1.2. Only currently enrolled university students can participate in the Contest. Winners will be required to confirm their student status.

1.3. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have your parent's or legal guardian's permission prior to participating in the Contest, and by participating you represent that your parent or legal guardian has provided such permission and agreed to these Rules.

1.4. Directors, officers, contractors and employees of Legit.ng or any of its affiliate companies and subsidiaries, and immediate families of each, as well as any other individual related to Legit.ng, are not eligible to enter the Contest.

2. WHAT IS THE CONTEST SCHEDULE?

2.1. The entry period is 01 October 2020 – 21 November 2020. You may join the Contest while it is live.

2.2. The results will be announced in the following time period 01 December 2020 – 03 December 2020.

2.3. The best essays will be published until 31 December 2020.

3. HOW DO I ENTER THE CONTEST?

3.1. To enter the Contest you should complete the following steps:

3.1.1. You should choose one of three categories for your essay:

1) Big Naija Independence: Your personal contribution
A true story on how you personally help your country to grow. It can be on your education, achievements or any other deeds that, in your opinion, help to improve the lives of Nigerian citizens, the atmosphere in your community or country in general. Please, show how your report improves the wider situation, not just your own experiences.

2) Big Naija Independence: Lessons learned since 1960
An article on an event that had a major impact in the social, economic, cultural or any other important spheres in Nigerian society. You can consider both positive and negative aspects of it, but make sure it is related to present times. Try using a retrospective approach for showing how it can help in perspective.

3) Big Naija Independence: Role of women

3.1.2. You should write an essay that corresponds to the following requirements:

  1. The essay must be 400-1000 words in length, unique and written from scratch, contain a main heading and several subheadings;

  2. Essay must be submitted in doc or docs format, other formats will not be accepted.

3.1.3. Submit your essay until 21st of October 2020 using entry form placed on our website.

3.2. Although Contest may be communicated, promoted, or administered by means of a third party social media or social networking service or site ("Third Party Service"), such as Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, the Contest is not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by any Third Party Service. Any questions, comments or complaints regarding the Contest should be directed to Legit.ng and not to any Third Party Service.

4. HOW MANY TIMES MAY I ENTER THE CONTEST?

You can submit only one essay.

5. COULD MY ENTRY INTO A CONTEST BE REFUSED OR REJECTED?

5.1. Your entry into a Contest could be refused or rejected if:

(a) you attempt to enter the Contest in an unauthorized mode;

(b) your entry contains false or misleading information, or is late, falsified, illegible, damaged or incomplete or otherwise irregular;

(c) your essay is fully or partially copied from any publicly available resource;

(d) your essay fully or partially copies the essay of the other participant;

(e) your entry is not in compliance with these Rules.

5.2. In addition, Legit.ng reserves the right to refuse any entry for any other reason as it may determine.

6. WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS OF ENTRY?

6.1. By entering the Contest:

(a) you agree to be bound by these Rules and by the decisions of Legit.ng, which decisions are final, binding and conclusive;

(b) you represent and warrant that (i) your entry, including any material comprising your entry (e.g. name, surname, as applicable) and any material submitted with your entry (all such material, collectively, the "Entry Material") is original to you, (ii) you have all necessary rights in and to your Entry Material to enter the Contest, including the consent of any third parties whose personal information is included in your Entry Material, and (iii) your Entry Material does not contain, depict, include or involve content that is, or could reasonably be considered to be, inappropriate, unsuitable or offensive, as determined by Legit.ng;

(c) you understand and agree that your entry, including your Entry Material, will not be returned to you and may be moderated or edited by Legit.ng as it deems appropriate;

(d) you grant to Legit.ng the irrevocable right to use your Entry Material in any media worldwide and for any purpose related to the Contest (or any similar contest), including the right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, translate, publish, make publicly available, or create derivative works from, your Entry Material without notification, compensation or additional consideration to you;

(e) you waive all claims of moral rights in any use of your Entry Material by Legit.ng pursuant to the rights granted in these Rules;

(f) you agree that Legit.ng will have the right at any time to require proof of identity or eligibility to enter the Contest; failure to provide any such proof upon request may result in disqualification;

(g) you release and forever discharge Legit.ng, any co-sponsors of the Contest, all of their respective parents, affiliates, and subsidiaries, Third Party Services, any other companies associated with the Contest, and all of their respective directors, officers, employees, agents, representatives, licensees, successors and assigns (collectively, the "Releasees"), and agree to indemnify and hold harmless each of the Releasees, from and against any and all claims, damages or liability, including any costs or losses related to personal injury, death, damage to or loss or destruction of property arising out of, or in any way related to, (i) your participation in the Contest, (ii) the awarding, receipt, possession, use or misuse of any prize, in whole or in part, or any travel or activity related to any prize, (iii) the use of any Entry Material or Publicity Material (defined below) in accordance with the rights granted in these Rules, or (iv) any breach of these Rules.

7. ARE THERE ANY PRIZE CONDITIONS?

7.1. In addition to any prize conditions as may be specified by Legit.ng from time to time, any prize awarded in a Contest is subject to the following conditions:

(a) The prize may be substituted, in whole or in part, with a prize or prize component of equal or greater value if the prize or prize component cannot be awarded for any reason.

(b) The prize may not be exactly as advertised. The prize is provided "as is" without representation or warranty of any kind by Legit.ng.

(c) The prize will not be replaced if lost, destroyed, mutilated or stolen.

(d) Incidental expenses and all other costs and expenses which are not specifically listed as part of a prize by Legit.ng and which may be associated with the award, acceptance, receipt and use the awarded prize are solely the responsibility of the respective prize winner.

(e) All taxes in connection with the prize, shall be responsibility of the respective prize winner.

8. HOW WILL POTENTIAL WINNERS BE SELECTED?

8.1. Three winners will be selected by the judges as described on the Contest webpage in more detail.

8.2. The prize will be payment of certain amount of money in NGN. The winners will receive the following prizes:

1st place - 115 000 NGN;

2nd place – 75 000 NGN;

3rd place – 38 000 NGN.

Moreover, the three winners will have an opportunity to personally meet Legit.ng Managing Director.

8.3. In the event any selected entrant declines a prize for any reason, or does not meet the requirements set forth in these Rules, as determined by Legit.ng, the selected entrant will be disqualified and, time permitting, an alternate entrant may be selected from among remaining eligible entries, or the prize may be cancelled.

9. HOW CAN A POTENTIAL WINNER BECOME A WINNER?

9.1. To be declared a winner, a potential winner:

(a) must be in compliance with these Rules;

(b) must sign and return documentation as may be reasonably required;

(c) must provide proof of identification to confirm eligibility or to claim a prize, or provide proof that he or she is the authorized account holder of any account associated with the selected entry, if requested.

10. HOW DO I CLAIM A PRIZE?

10.1. Once a potential winner is confirmed as a winner, prize distribution will be promptly coordinated.

10.2. Each winner will be notified via the contact details that it has provided in the entrance form.

10.3. The prize can be received either via bank transfer or in cash in the office of Legit.ng that will be communicated to the winners.

10.4. A winner must personally take delivery of the prize or provide bank account details for delivery of the prize within 30 days of being notified that such prize is available or within such other time period as may reasonably be advised. If a winner fails to take delivery of the prize or to provide bank account details for delivery of the prize within 30 days period, the prize will be deemed forfeited and Legit.ng may at its sole discretion choose not to award the prize at all. If an entrant is found to be ineligible, Legit.ng may at its sole discretion choose to award the prize to another entrant.

11. WILL I APPEAR IN ANY PUBLICITY IF I AM A WINNER?

11.1. If you are a winner, Legit.ng will be entitled to publish the name and surname of the winners, as well as their essays on its online properties.

12. HOW WILL MY PERSONAL INFORMATION BE COLLECTED, USED AND DISCLOSED?

12.1. By entering the Contest, you consent to Legit.ng's collection, use and disclosure of your personal information for purposes of administering the Contest as described in these Rules.

13. CAN Legit.ng CANCEL OR AMEND THE CONTEST?

13.1. Legit.ng may cancel, modify, or suspend any Contest or amend these Rules for any reason whatsoever. For example, if for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as originally planned, Legit.ng may adjust any of the dates, timeframes or other Contest mechanics, or suspend or cancel the Contest.

13.2. You may not amend these Rules in any way.

14. WILL Legit.ng DISQUALIFY OR BAN SOMEONE FROM A CONTEST?

14.1. Legit.ng may disqualify without notice or ban someone from a particular Contest or any future contests for any reason, including if Legit.ng finds that a person has:

(a) tampered with or attempted to tamper with, or undermined or attempted to undermine, the Legit.ngimate operation of a Contest;

(b) provided false or misleading information;

(c) acted in a disruptive manner, or with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any person; or

(d) otherwise violated these Rules.

14.2. Legit.ng expressly reserves the right to disqualify any entries that it believes in good faith are generated by an automated means or scripts or otherwise, violate these Rules or the spirit of the Contest. Entries generated by script, macro or other automated means or otherwise violate these Rules or the spirit of the Contest are void.

15. WHAT HAPPENS IF PART OF THESE RULES BECOMES UNENFORCEABLE OR DOES NOT APPLY?

If any part of these Rules is legally unenforceable or inapplicable, then that part will be deemed invalid; however, the remainder of these Rules will otherwise continue to be legally binding.

16. DO HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT A CONTEST?

Any questions regarding the Contests may be directed to Legit.ng through any relevant Third Party Service.
